CAT’S MOTHER CALLED the next day. Usually during work hours she let the machine take her calls, but her mother knew that. Cat sighed at the voice demanding she pick up. If she didn’t, her mother would simply call back until she drove Cat crazy.
She snatched up the cordless phone and tucked it between her ear and her shoulder. “Hello, Mom. I’m right in the middle of something, can I get back to you?”
“No, you can’t. You’ll forget and this is important. Vitally important.”
Cat groaned silently. It always was with her mother. “What do you need?”
“Darling, I’m having a party.”
Obviously a matter of desperate significance. “Great, Mom,” she muttered, hoping her mother wouldn’t spend half an hour describing the upcoming event. She listened with half an ear while her mother chattered on.
Now where was that return she’d been looking for? Could she have misfiled it? That wasn’t like her, but she’d been distracted lately.
“You must come, Cat. I’ve arranged a treat for you.”
“A treat?” she asked cautiously. She stopped fingering the stack of papers she deemed most likely to hold the errant return. Last time her mother had arranged “a treat” it had been a date with her best friend’s nephew. He’d had bad breath and octopus arms. Ick.
“Mom, I don’t think I can—”
“Please don’t disappoint me, darling. This Saturday. I’ve asked Kyle to bring you and he’s simply thrilled. The Cavanaughs will be here, and the Max wells and—”
Her words penetrated and Cat pushed herself away from the desk. Not again. “How many times have I told you?” she interrupted. “I’m not interested in Kyle.”
“Oh, pooh. You’re being so stubborn. Give the poor man another chance.”
Poor man, my foot, Cat thought. “No. Call him back and tell him I can’t make it.”
“Cat, don’t be stubborn.” Her mother sounded irritated now. “I want you to come, so why shouldn’t you come with an eminently eligible man?”
“Because I already have a date with another man.” Or she would by Saturday. The perfect opportunity to be with Mark again.
“What man?” Her mother sounded suspicious.
Cat grinned, pleased for once with her mother’s ploys. “I’ll introduce him to you Saturday. Gotta go, Mom.”
Cat had a plan now. Simple. Direct. And she hoped, effective.
As long as she didn’t lose her nerve between now and Saturday night.
